RELEASE: Democrats Serve PAC endorses four new House candidates in competitive districts

Highlighting their public service backgrounds, the national group plans to actively support today’s four endorsees— Mike O’Brien (PA-10), Carol Murphy (NJ-03), Adam Hollier (MI-13), and Trygve Hammer (ND-AL)–in 2024.

Washington, DC (March 28, 2024) — Today, Democrats Serve—a national organization supporting Democrats with public service backgrounds—announced the endorsement of four new candidates running in competitive elections nationwide.

Brett Broesder—the organization’s founding executive director—noted that all four candidates receiving an endorsement today have first-hand experience as public service professionals.

“For frontline public service pros, strengthening their communities isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life,” said Broesder. “That’s why Democrats Serve proudly supports these four public service pros running competitive House races. We’ll actively work to ensure each of these candidates get the support and resources necessary to win in 2024.”

The four new candidates that Democrats Serve is endorsing today are as follows:

  • Mike O’Brien (PA-10): Veteran.

  • Carol Murphy (NJ-03): Former legislative aide.

  • Adam Hollier (MI-13): Veteran, former volunteer firefighter, and legislative aide.

  • Trygve Hammer (ND-AL): Veteran and former public school teacher.

Mike O’Brien (PA-10)—who is running in a competitive Democratic primary in a marginal district, heralding a  Performance Voter Index (PVI) score of R+4.85, which is currently Republican-held—said that Democrats Serve’s  endorsement is a testament to his values.

“This election is about putting the needs of Pennsylvanians first and electing leaders with character and integrity to  represent us in Washington,” said O’Brien (PA-10). “I've dedicated my life to promoting and defending American  values, and I'm honored to have the support of an organization that recognizes the importance of commitment to  service and community. Democrats Serve's endorsement is a testament to the values that I've upheld throughout  my career. We'll work tirelessly to bring positive change to South Central Pennsylvania, ensuring a brighter future  for all."

Carol Murphy (NJ-03)—running in a competitive Democratic primary for this marginal seat with a PVI of D+5, being  vacated by sitting Rep. Andy Kim due to his U.S. Senate bid—noted that public service is a family tradition.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of Democrats Serve. Public service is in my blood,” said Murphy (NJ 03). “My dad proudly served our nation in the military, and I am running for Congress because I believe in carrying  on our family's tradition of fighting to improve the lives of every American. I’m grateful to have the support of an  organization that champions public servants and encourages us all to step up and be a force for good in our  communities.”

Adam Hollier (MI-13), running in a heavily Democratic district against incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar, said he's laser-focused on getting things done for his community.

"The simple truth is that Congress is broken," said Hollier (MI-13). "Communities like ours are constantly left behind by millionaire congressmen and right-wing extremists who care more about their ambitions and partisan politics than delivering for the people who need it most. We won't change that until we change the people we send to Washington in the first place. At every turn, I've been guided in public service by one simple truth: We can do better. And with Democrats Serve, we will do better together."

Trygve Hammer (ND-AL), a Democrat running for North Dakota’s Republican-held at-large congressional seat, said he's thrilled to receive Democrats Serve's support.

“True love of country and care for community are shown through service and sacrifice, said Hammer (ND-AL). In every clime, place, classroom, barracks, and battlefield, I have kept that spirit of service in mind. Democrats Serve is not just the name of an organization, but also a basic truth.”

The four endorsees announced today join a growing list of public service pros who Democrats Serve is supporting this year, including: Incumbent Senate Democrat (1): Chris Murphy (CT-Sen); U.S. Senate Candidates (5): Colin Allred (TX-Sen), Angela Alsobrooks (MD-Sen), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-Sen), Katrina Christiansen (ND-Sen), and Adam Schiff (CA-Sen); Incumbent House Democrats (8): Yadira Caraveo (CO-08), Joe Courtney (CT-02), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Val Foushee (NC-04), Jahana Hayes (CT-05), Jim Himes (CT-04), and John Larson (CT-01); U.S. House Candidates (27): Sue Altman (NJ-07), Lanon Baccam (IA-03), Christina Bohannan (IA-01), Sabrina Bousbar (FL-13), Gil Cisneros (CA-31), Ashley Ehasz (PA-01), Sam Eppler (TX-24), Shomari Figures (AL-02), Hilary Franz (WA-06), Adam Gray (CA-13), Sam Liccardo (CA-16), Michelle Maldonado (VA-10), John Mannion (NY- 22), Dave Min (CA-47), Jessica Morse (CA-03), Johnny Olszewski (MD-02), Josh Riley (NY-19), Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08), Mike Rogers (MD-03), Will Rollins (CA-41), Rudy Salas (CA-22), Briana Sewell (VA-07), Amish Shah (AZ-01), Missy Cotter Smasal (VA-02), Derek Tran (CA-45), Tony Vargas (NE-02), and Joe Vogel (MD-06).
