Highlighting his background as a frontline public service pro, a new national organization plans to actively support Tony Vargas in Nebraska’s 2nd District.

Milford, CT (October 27, 2021) – Today, Democrats Serve — a new national political action committee (PAC) that supports Democrats running for office with public service backgrounds — is endorsing Tony Vargas in his bid to unseat Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon of the 2nd District.

Brett Broesder, the PAC’s executive director, noted that Tony Vargas — who is a former public school teacher and member of the Omaha Public Schools Board — is an excellent example of a Democrat running for office, with frontline public service experience, who can excel as a candidate and a policymaker.

“Tony Vargas knows public service,” said Broesder. “As a former public school teacher, Tony’s proven his commitment to improving the quality of life — and educational opportunities — for kids in the Cornhusker State and beyond. For Tony Vargas, standing up for Nebraska families isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life.”

Tony Vargas, who currently serves as a state senator in Nebraska, stated that he’s proud to receive Democrats Serve’s endorsement.

“I am proud to receive support from Democrats Serve. My parents instilled in me the value of community and giving back, which drives my work in public service,” said Vargas. “I am fully committed to continuing to serve our community by fighting for opportunities for working families like mine.”

Democrats Serve works to support public service candidates, who often lack access to the built-in fundraising networks of other candidates.

Since officially launching a few months ago, the PAC has made endorsements nationwide in competitive elections, including: U.S. Senate Candidate’s Cheri Beasley (NC) and Val Demings (FL); U.S. House Candidates Aramis Ayala (FL-10) and Matt Castelli (NY-21); incumbent House Democrats Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07), Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Susan Wild (PA-07), Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), Jahana Hayes (CT-05), and Katie Porter (CA-45); Gubernatorial Candidate Katie Hobbs (AZ); and 28 candidates who ran for state and local offices nationwide — all of whom won their respective races — in 2021.

Broesder also said that the group is making a concerted effort to recruit diverse candidates with public safety and justice system experience.

“Republicans in Washington are turning their backs on law enforcement by opposing bipartisan investigations into what role politics played in allowing insurrectionists to kill a Capitol Police officer,” said Broesder. “Republicans have made their priorities clear: appeasing right-wing extremists trumps law and order. America deserves better. That’s why electing Democrats like Tony Vargas, who know first-hand what it means to serve their communities in government, is critical to safeguarding our democracy.”

Democrats Serve’s overall national effort consists of recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats with backgrounds serving communities in government — at the federal, state, and local levels — including teachers, police officers, firefighters, first responders, social workers, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, public health nurses, and more.

Broesder added: “Tony Vargas’ experience as a frontline public service pro provides him with first-hand expertise in tackling the toughest challenges our communities face today. That’s why Democrats Serve, to help ensure he has the support and resources necessary to win, is proud to endorse his candidacy.”
