New York’s next mayor: Who should it be?

A number of Democrats Serve supporters have asked — who do we support in the upcoming New York mayor's race? After all, there are at least half a dozen candidates earning meaningful support.

With election day approaching in less than two weeks, I thought I'd introduce a couple of the candidates to you, and ask you: Which candidate do you think would make a better mayor of New York City?

Eric Adams is the Bronx Borough President and a retired police officer. He joined the NYPD to change it from within — leading a coalition of officers who fought the pervasive racism and bias in the police department.

His fight was fueled by his childhood experience, when at age 15, he was beaten by police in the basement of a precinct house. He made the transition to politics when he was elected to the State Senate; where he championed tenant protections, workers' rights, fought gun violence, and reform police abuse of "stop and frisk."

He's been endorsed by unions representing nurses, transit workers, and firefighters.

Kathryn Garcia has been the go-to problem solver for New York City. She led the sanitation department (garbage, recycling, snow removal) and the housing authority, and served as incident commander for Hurricane Sandy and as the COVID-19 food czar.

During the pandemic, she worked to ensure that 120,000 meals a day were delivered to seniors and others who couldn't leave their homes — over 200 million meals so far.

She's been a lifelong public servant, rising from intern to the director of the sanitation department, and has now been endorsed by all three sanitation department unions and the New York Times.

As the largest city in America, bigger than 40 states, New York's next mayor matters to all of us. So, I'm asking you: Who do you think should be the next mayor of New York City?

Someone Else

I don't know!

At Democrats Serve, we believe that America's public servants make for excellent political leaders and policymakers. After all, they know first-hand the real-life impact of policies and their direct work in strengthening their communities makes them uniquely positioned to lead.

I'm glad you're with us.
